*****
My oldest daughter’s favorite
flower is the rose. She loves the always-perfect form, the
musky maturity of it’s perfume. Even as a child, she
loves the simple beauty of the age-old classic - which is perfect, since she's such an old soul and so totally amazing.
This kid is totally gorgeous, incredibly smart, and has a sweet heart like no other - even if it is protected by what we jokingly call "her crunchy exterior."
*****
Like
a seed planted in the ground,
She
grows,
Ever
more each day.
Soft
as the petals of a rose,
She
embodies innocence,
Even
in the awkward stages of growth.
Thorny
as the pointed stem,
She
grows prickly
In
her youth.
And
yet as she leaves behind
The
tiny baby bud she used to be,
She
becomes something
Ever
more beautiful
In
the form of a young woman.

This precious girl is the firstborn of my live children, and has changed my whole world simply by existing. Through heart problems, family issues, and so much, she has been a constant source of joy in my world - even when she chooses to also be a source of challenge. She's so like me in so many ways, but also so different as she begins to embrace her sense of individuality. And I'm amazed by it ... and so proud to be the one to guide her.
I like your poem very much. It really touched my heart.
