Works For Me Wednesday: How I'll Never Sort (Or Match) Socks Again
Sorting socks sucks, doesn't it? It takes time, there's always a sock or three missing, and there's really no good way to pair them together for storing without stretching them out. You fold them over and flip the ankle part of the outside one back so it hold them? The outside one gets stretched. You stuff one inside the other? The outside one gets stretched! So then you end up with half your socks missing and the other half stretched all out and gross.
But not my socks. I've eliminated the hassle of sorting and matching socks from my life completely, and it's made so much more room in my laundry day for other things (like folding and hanging and de-fuzzing and searching for that damned bounce sheet that always gets lost and ends up hanging out of the back of my shirt ...)
Anyway, back to the point. No more sock-matching, right?
The method I like to use is a simple one: don't buy a dozen different kinds of socks. Right now, especially for my family, socks are easy. For myself, I always buy these: Hanes Women's ComfortBlend No Show, White.
It means no sorting, no matching, no pairing. I just have a sock drawer that I put all my socks into, and when I need socks, I pull out the first two I touch. When I notice that one is getting stretched out from overwear or worn through, I throw it out. When I noticed that I don't seem to have a lot of socks anymore, I buy another pack. Easy.
For Josephine, I buy socks in all sorts of fun colors and patterns - except white. I do this for two reasons:
- She's a wild kid who likes fun patterns and colors - sometimes she even likes to mismatch her socks on purpose (usually only when she's wearing pants that will hide them).
- Her feet are the same size as mine now, so it's easy to go through the socks and put all the big white ones in my drawer, and the big crazy-patterned/colored ones in hers.
For Eden, I buy the same socks as mine for the most part, except that hers are obviously smaller than mine, so it's easy to separate hers from mine when I do the laundry. Eden's feet are growing though, so I make sure her socks also have colored stripes at the bottoms - unlike mine, which have no color except for the Hanes branding across the ball of the foot. She does have a few pairs of fun socks too though, such as Frozen, Sophia the First, and a couple of other fun patterns. (But for these, since Eden is seven, sorting all of the socks and pairing her own has become a great age-appropriate "chore" for her.)
But as simple as it all sounds, in the end it means no more sorting, no more matching, no more pairing. Ever again.
And that?
Well, it works for me.

I started getting into the Korean socks craze, the crazier the better, so just tossing them in a drawer won't work for me. But, I don't sort my hubby socks, I too hate sorting socks and many times you may find them in a small laundry basket in his dressing room. He has a separate room because he wears a uniform and lots of military gear. I wash and fold everything except the socks which he matches himself.
ReplyDeleteFair enough. But if Koreans wear crazy socks on purpose - why do they match them? *wink*
DeleteI am right there with ya. I HATE matching socks, so I do the same thing. I buy a big pack of one kind of socks for each of us and it makes life SO much easier.
ReplyDeleteI'm serious, that little trick changed my life. I don't even hate laundry in the same way anymore.
Deleteeven i hate matching scoks but still wear them lol
ReplyDeleteDefinitely still wear them!! We wear them, we just don't match them anymore because it's so easy to just sort mine, Joey's, and Eden's. No need for matching after that, as we each have mostly just a pile of plain socks that all match each other.
DeleteI'm disgusted when I often can't see the other pair of my socks especially when I'm in a hurry to leave. It totally ruins my day. lol
ReplyDeleteThat's another part of why we do it this way. Joey likes mismatching hers from time to time, but Eden is a VERY particular girl, and all things must be as they should be or she gets really upset. So having all the socks mostly the same eliminates that for her.
DeleteWhen I was younger I had a huge collection of crazy socks, including toe socks! I still have a huge bag of socks that aren't matched together and I probably should go through that bag at some point! haha 😊
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, toe socks!! I love toe socks!
DeleteOMG I LOVE THIS!!!!!! hilarious but works. Thank you, Robin
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the post.
DeleteHow funny!
ReplyDeleteI have tons of black socks...matching them is a disaster
Ha! Not if they all look the same.
DeleteI can't help myself, I pair all my socks and all my partners socks and if I don't I think about the spare socks in the drawer... I know, I'm sad. :D

Hahaha! That's part of what made me so happy about Joey starting to like mismatching hers. Now it doesn't matter if one gets lost, worn out, torn. Just pick another one, they all don't match anyway.
DeleteMatching socks is the most crazy chore for our family. No matter how we do it, we always end up with mismatched or wrong socks in our drawers.
ReplyDeleteI'm telling you, this little trick has changed laundry for my family. SO much easier.
DeleteI lose socks all the time. ALL THE TIME. I'm forever buying new socks.
ReplyDeleteSee, and now you don't have to throw away the perfectly good not-lost sock just because of that one stray. If they all look the same, there are no forlorn matchless blue socks hanging out in the drawer.
DeleteWhat's even better, you NEVER have the scenario where you lose one sock, so you throw the other one away, then you FIND the lost sock after it's too late to rescue the thrown-away sock.
This is how my husband and I store our socks but our kids seem to have a million different pairs and I can never find a match!
ReplyDeleteThat's why I've switched us to just white. As Joey gets older and her feet are coming close to the same size as mine, I did need an extra differentiation between ours, though - that's why mine have grey toe/heel areas, whereas the white ones she has (mixed in with the psycho pile) are just plain or with pink toe/heel areas. Makes them super easy to tell apart, and no matching required.
DeleteThis is such a smart idea!I lose socks all the time!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteI've given up on my son's socks. He doesn't care that they don't match so I try not to either lol
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Go to white. Believe me, it's so much easier than trying not to be bothered.
DeleteAt the moment I have a nappy wet bag full of odd mismatched socks and I have no idea where their partners are. I think I need to invest in quite a few pairs of these!
ReplyDeleteIt has literally changed my life. No more dreading "doing the socks." I just do the laundry, and the socks pretty much take care of themselves.
DeleteThis was amusing to read about. I have a drawer full of miss matched socks that I just can't seem to find the matches too
ReplyDeleteWell, you can always do like my daughter has, and just embrace them. Wear them mismatched if you dare!
DeleteWe only buy one type of sock each. I have black ankle socks and hubby has black man socks. lol Every one can be pair up together. This way we don't have to sort and if one gets a hole it doesn't become lonely. I can be matched up with another one who lost it's mate.
ReplyDeleteExactly! That's the whole reason we switched to this. Makes everything about laundry SO much easier.
DeleteThis is genius! I think it's a great idea to buy socks of the same kind, definitely eliminates the hassle of having to find the other pair!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely one of my most favorite household tips.
Deletehaha matching socks - my husband hates it :) I have to ball the pairs for him!
ReplyDeleteNah - buy him all the same color, and there will be no more balling. I stuff Eden's white socks down into an empty tissue box I keep in her drawer - every morning, she just pulls two socks out.
DeleteNo problem for me... I buy the same color of the same brand. No problem for my GF either because she has no problem wearing mismatched socks so long as they are bright with patterns. Isn't that what all the cool kids are doing these days? Rich B
ReplyDeleteSounds like my oldest daughter - she likes hers mismatched because "it's fun!"
DeleteLOL i have tons of socks but i dont know i always wear two different foots and even when i wear same foots one always on the wrong side lol this post is definitely for me
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the post!
DeleteI rarely wear socks, so sorting mine are not an issue. However, for my husband - same brand and color every time. My daughter on the other hand - she loves wearing mismatched socks so this is not an issue at all.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you already have a version of what my family does. The point for us was to not only make matching and pairing less of an annoyance, but to make the socks easier to sort out as our feet slowly come together in size.
DeleteOnly time I need socks are when I wear boots, so I tend to wear nonmatching socks anyways! No one sees them :)
ReplyDeleteThat's kind of how it is with me. I just have a few pairs of my own, but I wanted to be able to easily sort mine from my teen's, because she's hard on her socks and the ankles always end up impossibly stretched out - but I can't wear them comfortably if they aren't tightly fitted to my foot.
Deletemy kids love wearing missmatched socks, usually fun patterns and such. i figure why not
ReplyDeleteHey, you gotta let 'em have something, right?
Deletewhat a nice idea! that will make my life a little bit easier
ReplyDeleteThanks! Glad you liked the post - I hope it helps you!
