Quarterly Goals 2017, #3

This is sure to be a super-long post, so I'm just going to jump right into it. For those of you who might want the back story of how I started making Quarterly Goals lists and how Quarterly Goals are making a difference in my life, feel free to check out the first two posts (#1) here and (#2) here. For those more ready to dive right in, here are my goals from the second quarter - and whether or not I accomplished them:

Pray with my beads often enough to finally memorize my rosary prayer.

I still haven't totally accomplished this. This past quarter was really hectic for me, and there were a lot of things playing into my not being as dedicated as I had hoped to be at being able to check this one off. BUT - with that being said, I have made progress this quarter.

Keep going to weekly therapy sessions.

This one, I've done. It isn't always easy and sometimes the subject matter is sensitive enough to keep me feeling a little messed up for a few days - but my therapist is really great at being able to read what I'm ready for, and she guides our sessions according to my ability to handle them. I'm so thankful to have met her.

Work up to drinking 100 ounces of water every day.

This one, in the concept that I intended drinking 100 ounces to be a daily practice, was a fail. But in the concept of continuing to up my water intake on a consistent basis, this one's a win. Still, I have only made it to 100 ounces like twice this past quarter - so I'm going to try again. I picked up a 26-ounce MyBevi tumbler from Walmart, and it has helped a lot because I can fill it up, drink some water right off the top, and then add some ice to keep the rest cold until I can get it down. It even keeps ice in my water overnight, so I wake up to cold water in the mornings!

Over the last few months, God has seen fit to bring lots of new people into my life, many of whom have wormed their way into my heart. Some of them are males. A certain one may or may not, at some point, have become something of a romantic interest despite the complications offered by our quite separate lives. I'm still waiting to see what happens here.

Keep lifting my daughters up and coaching them through my breakup from their dad, the transitions they're going through as they enter/approach the teen years, and general life stuff. So basically, keep being a mom.

This has mostly gone well. My daughters are adjusting, in their own ways, to what our life is right now - but we're also excitedly planning the changes still to come. They still go through emotional cycles when dealing with their feelings of abandonment regarding their dad, but they're adjusting to that too, and I've been able to coach them through their moments of sadness by reminding them that sometimes our paths in life separate from the people we love - and that while this can be painful and hard to experience, it allows each person to walk their own path, experiencing what they need in the moment. The idea that sometimes paths cross again later gives them hope - and the knowledge that sometimes paths separate forever reminds them to appreciate who is in their life right now, while they're there.

Also, we had family portraits taken - watch for an upcoming post all about how that happened, along with some of the pictures of us!

Finish writing Still Fighting For Freedom.

This one was a miserable failure. I have made progress, slowly - but not enough to even remotely call this a win. So, I'm planning to recycle it for another round.

  • The #1 arbitrary goal I didn't plan to share. There has been some progress on this goal - not quite as much as I'd like, but some. And since this one isn't totally under my control, all I can do right now is keep working at it, and keep praying it comes together. Still, I've done my part to move things forward, so I'm calling it a win.
  • Hit 5000 page views for two out of the three months, which will hopefully increase Adsense by 50%. This one was a fail, too. With Eden having surgery, the kids getting out of school, and other personal things that were going on, I wasn't as able to get out and promote my blog as I had been before. My page views dipped dramatically, which also dealt a blow to my Adsense revenue. Also, 50% may have been just a bit too ambitious for this goal, so I'll be revising this one a bit for the next quarter.
  • Double affiliate sales commissions. This one was a win!
  • Hit my $10 goal on Patreon. Another win - I actually hit the $20 goal!

Keep up and improve self-care methods and keep practicing positive affirmation.

This was a success. I don't know if it's because of therapy, the new people in my life, my increased effort to spend time listening to coaching podcasts, or my continued attention to my relationship with God - but either way, I'm doing better at making time to take care of myself a little bit each day. Not that I'm anywhere near being the sort of girl who walks through life looking spectacular with manicured hands and fashion-forward dress style ... but I am making an effort to let myself play a little instead of being so driven to be busy all the time.

Practice discernment in interpersonal relationships - be more careful of who I open up to, and more open to trusting people who deserve it.

This one was another one I feel that I succeeded with. I've been much more careful in recent months of who I open up to (despite how incredibly open I tend to be here), and I think I'm seeing a payoff. Only time will tell though - so I'm continuing to be more careful about setting and maintaining my boundaries with other people, which has been a huge thing for me in the past. It actually feels really good to be learning how to reduce the way porous boundaries have gotten me into trouble in the past.

So that's where I stand now, with a win/loss ratio of 7/4. Seven wins out of eleven goals feels good to me, so I'm happy to call the last quarter an overall success. And with that being said, here are my goals for the third quarter of 2017 - using the same categories I've been using (which I originally found here):
  • SPIRITUAL: Memorize my rosary! When I use it, I find my prayer life to be much more focused and dedicated - and the meditative aspect of it helps with my anxiety. It's hard because my memory isn't very good ... but it's worth doing.
  • PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: Going to therapy every week has become a routine that I feel like I can manage to keep up now, so I'm going to add a new goal here, while continuing to maintain my weekly therapy appointments. This quarter, my goal is to listen to at least one personal-development/life-coaching podcast every day. They always leave me feeling strengthened and encouraged, so I think adding them to my daily morning routine will be a major bonus for me. This will be admittedly more challenging during the summer where my kids's demands often throw my routine WAY off (and crank my anxiety WAY up), but I'll be trying, and once they go back to school, I'll be focusing harder on this.
  • HEALTH: With my new tumbler, I'm determined to make my water goal this time. I feel that if I try to hit 100 ounces daily and succeed 2-3 times a week, that should be enough to keep me well hydrated through the summer, without overtaxing my body or making me feel like I'm drowning myself.
  • ROMANCE: I'm sticking with N/A at the moment - I feel that I still have a lot of things in my life that I need to bring together before I can really offer myself in a way that I feel is equal to what I would want someone to offer to me. Not saying I'm closed to possibility (as mentioned above), or that I'd pass up a really good one if one should present itself (which may or may not be happening - we'll see) ... but I'm not setting specific goals until I feel like I have my ducks a little more neatly in a row. In the meantime? Well, like I said, I'm not exactly closing myself off - and I am very excited about my current ... prospects.
  • FAMILY: As summer ends and a new school year begins, my goal here is to keep guiding and teaching my kids; I hope I can continue to mentor Joey as she works to be a positive influence on those around her, and that I can keep boosting Eden's sense of self as she continues to thrive and make friends in her age group.
  • BUSINESS/CAREER: Finish writing Still Fighting For Freedom! I want so much to tell the rest of Christine's story, and I miss the excitement of releasing a new novel. So this one is going to be a definite focus especially as the summer winds down and the kids start back to school next month.
  • FINANCE: Hit 1000 page views monthly throughout this quarter. This is a relatively modest goal, but since I want my focus this quarter to be on writing more than marketing, I feel like this is a good place to shoot for. (As always, I would love your help with this! If you like my posts, please share them with your friends - and always feel free to leave comments. If you like it here, spread the word to others who might like it here too!)
  • FINANCE: Increase my affiliate sales commissions by 20%. Hopefully, with the recent introduction of my "Featured Favorite Products" segments at the end of each post, I'll get better and better at sharing brands and items I love in a way that introduces you to new brands and products you'll love, too. (Want to help with this one, too? When you see a product linked on my site, it's probably an affiliate link. If that's a product you think you'd like for yourself, buy it through my links. It doesn't cost you anything extra, and my family receives a small blessing commission. Also, feel free to check this page at anytime - I'll always have a current list of the companies I'm working with, along with any discounts I might be able to pass along to you.)
  • FINANCE: Continue to grow and attract support on my Patreon account. I'm so excited to have made it to the $20 mark on that account - it means that Patreon alone is able to cover the music subscription I listen to while writing, and my Microsoft Word subscription! I'd like to see Patreon continue to grow this quarter, so I'm going to get ambitious and say that I'd like my Patreon to hit $40! There are lots of ways that could happen, so I'll let you read more about what Patreon is and how it works to support my writing here, and if you think you'd like to sign up to support me, you can do that here.
  • FUN/RECREATION: Over the last year or so, I've battled really severe depression off and on. The end of my last relationship wasn't a hard emotional blow for me, as I had already begun to distance myself quite a lot from what that relationship represented to me. But watching the way it hurt my kids was hard, especially since they were the reasons I stayed in the relationship so long - to prevent them having to go through what they're going through for as long as possible. Dealing with watching my daughters as they had their hearts broken - and being helpless to stop it or change it - had me really struggling at times, and in addition to that, being alone as the parent of my kids doesn't leave a lot of time for self-care. Doing the parent job full-time with no partner gets demanding, and there isn't often a lot of time left for me to take care of me. So as things steadily got worse, I sort of stopped having fun ... because I stopped caring enough to make time to have fun. I have hardly read even one book this year, and the accountability I get from my Patreon supporters is probably the sole reason I've written any fiction at all. So my goal for this quarter is to do something fun for me everyday - whether that's painting my nails or watching a movie, reading a book or even just taking my coffee out on the porch to drink it in peace.
  • SOCIAL: My goal this quarter is to maintain last quarter's progress, and to keep moving forward in creating a social circle that I can thrive in, slowly and steadily continuing to replace and rebuild what used to be - and sometimes still is - an incredibly toxic social environment.

So that's it, my goals for the third quarter of 2017. What are yours?
Today's "Featured Favorite Product" is super simple - it's the pen I always use while journaling, writing in a planner, or signing papers for the girls's doctors or schools. And I know a pen seems like such a little thing, such a meaningless detail - any pen writes, right?

But no. Not like this pen. Not like the Pilot G2 - which glides so seamlessly over the paper, which hasn't ever leaked in my purse or exploded in my hand or pocket, which doesn't irritate the heck out of the writing callus on the inside of my left middle finger. Which I have to re-buy constantly because Eden always steals mine.

Which I don't generally mind because they're that damned good. And at just $5.49? Seriously, pick 'em up. You'll be glad.

Quick Disclaimer: Since I am using affiliate links here, remember that if you choose to click product links on my site and end up purchasing through them, I will receive a (very) small commission for referring you. Rest assured that this is at no extra cost to you, but my family and I appreciate your support. (If you'd like to see a list of other companies I'm currently working with, click here.)

  1. I love this concept - will be trying this out myself .

    1. It has been working well for me for sure! This has been a year of change for me, and making these quarterly goal lists has really helped me in my efforts to stay on track. Not that I always get it ... but I'm trying. And that's what counts, right?
