In the following excerpt, Annie's had a rough day and Malik's hoping to ease her mind. But as usual, he can't help goofing off a little:
Stretched out on her stomach, she
rested her head on her arms, trying not to think that this might be the last
time they spent together this way. He started with her toes again, skimming his
knuckles over the arch of her foot.
"You are awesome at
this," she whispered, sighing as his palm slid over her ankle and up to
trace the curve of her calf. Closing her eyes, she noted each sensation,
storing memories for the day when he would leave.
Mistaking her tone for simple
relaxation, Malik squeezed her leg, then released it. "Well, we all have
our talents, I suppose." There was laughter in his voice, and Annie savored
that, too, as he traced a line in cold lotion from her ankle to the back of her
knee. He propped her foot on his leg, his big hands circling her calf, his
fingertips coaxing tension from her body.
He’d nearly finished the other
leg, and she was almost asleep when he probed the sensitive backs of her knees.
She kept her eyes closed, struggling to stay relaxed as her mind traced the
path of his fingers, smoothing gently along the backs of her thighs.
She was failing miserably.
She was so focused on breathing
normally, she jerked in surprise as he tapped the back of one thigh. “Okay,” he
said slowly, clearing his throat. “Turn over.”
She nearly choked on the breath
she was holding. “Turn over?” she croaked. “Really?” She’d been bluffing when
she changed her clothes, faking the easy flirtation as she dropped to her knees
and stretched out on the blanket. Now, she lay motionless, nearly bare under
his hands, her bravado in tatters.
“Do I really still need to
promise to be a gentleman?” Malik nudged her hip, urging her to move. “Roll
over, Annie. Otherwise you’ll end up with crusty knees and uneven smoothness.
Do it.” Leaning down to wink at her, he waved the lotion bottle. “What’s the
matter? You chicken?”
“You know,” she said, her face
flaming. “I think maybe I am.”
Unbothered, Malik dragged his eyes down the length of her body. "I happen to love chicken," he answered. "But not when it's dry, so make like a rotisserie and turn."
